Setup

  1. On a computer, open Tumblr in a web browser and go to your blog.
  2. Open Edit appearance, then Edit theme.
  3. Under the theme name, click Edit HTML.
  4. Select all of the existing code, delete it, and paste in everything from theme.html.
  5. Click Update Preview, check the preview, then click Save.
  6. Go back to the theme settings to set the options. They appear under Theme options.

Margin Notes puts your writing in a single reading column set in Newsreader, a book serif. Dates and tags sit in the margins like notes beside an essay, giving the layout a quiet, writerly feel.

The theme supports all Tumblr post types, along with reblog trails and tags. Search and pages are included, as is an ask box. Choose colours for the background and text, then the accent and margin text. Switch photo captions below images and drop caps on or off. You can also add your own header note. Margin Notes is a custom HTML theme for Tumblr’s desktop web experience.
