features.lessonPreview turns expandable excerpts off while preserving module summaries, lesson lists and page links.

Features

  • A photographic cover introduces the course and links to the course catalog and a free sample lesson.
  • The signature lesson preview expands a written excerpt beneath each module's summary and lesson list.
  • The curriculum includes four module pages, with narrow reading columns for modules and journal entries.
  • The course catalog has category pages, sorting and detail pages with photographs, facts and prices.
  • Checkout links can be set per product or variant through Stripe Payment Links, Polar, Lemon Squeezy or Shopify.
  • An optional Stripe Checkout cart requires a server adapter and your own Stripe secret key.
  • The optional EmDash edition lets you edit menus and site settings in EmDash.

What the download includes

  • Syllabus version 1.0.0 includes Astro source with typed content collections and strict TypeScript.
  • The demo content includes four modules, three course or guide products, two categories and three journal entries.
  • Three bundled CC0 photographs have credits in src/data/photos.json and source records in ASSETS.json.
  • README, GETTING-STARTED, CUSTOMIZE, AGENTS and DISCOVERY explain setup, editing and publishing controls.
  • CHANGELOG and LICENSE document changes and the theme code's terms.

Setup

  1. Use Node 22.19 or newer for the Astro 7.3.3 source.
  2. Install dependencies with npm ci and start the local preview with npm run dev.
  3. Follow CUSTOMIZE.md to update src/site.config.ts, Markdown content and photographs; any coding agent can follow AGENTS.md to help you edit.
  4. Replace placeholder checkout links and configure course access or downloads with your own payment or learning service.
  5. For the optional cart, configure a server adapter and a private STRIPE_SECRET_KEY, then verify your own Stripe test-mode checkout and delivery.
  6. For the optional EmDash edition, run npm run emdash:setup and deploy on Node.js or Cloudflare; edit menus and site settings in EmDash.
  7. Run npm run check, npm test, npm run test:commerce-off — –strict, npm run test:checkout and npm run build before publishing.
  8. Publish dist/ at your domain root for a static site, or use a server deployment for the optional cart or EmDash.

Syllabus is an Astro site template for instructors and educators presenting written courses, workshops and digital guides. A photographic cover introduces your subject, followed by a numbered curriculum, instructor information, purchase formats and frequently asked questions. The demo uses a fictional night photography course as example content you replace with your own lessons, photographs and wording. Syllabus version 1.0.0 costs $47 USD one-time.

Its signature feature is an expandable written lesson preview beneath a module’s summary and lesson list. Each module also has a public reading page, and a separate sample lesson gives visitors a longer excerpt. You can switch extras off in src/site.config.ts: features.lessonPreview removes the expandable excerpts while keeping the outline and module links, and commerce.enabled disables commerce independently. The journal provides space for related articles and field notes.

Commerce is enabled for courses and guides. Set checkout links per product or variant using Stripe Payment Links, Polar, Lemon Squeezy or Shopify. The optional Stripe Checkout cart needs a server adapter and your own Stripe secret key; this theme’s checkout probe used mocked Stripe only. Connect your payment or learning service to deliver downloads or protected lessons. Public module pages do not provide student accounts, progress tracking or access control. Contact forms post to a configurable HTTPS endpoint, with an email link as the fallback when no endpoint is set.

Edit the Markdown content and src/site.config.ts using CUSTOMIZE.md, or work with any coding agent using AGENTS.md. The optional EmDash edition is available through npm run emdash:setup on Node.js or Cloudflare, with menus and site settings edited in EmDash. The source includes three credited CC0 photographs, setup instructions and publishing guidance. Replace the sample delivery, refund and legal text with your own terms before publication.
